Dr. Biruh Tesfa Workeneh

Dr. Biruh Tesfa Workeneh, MD, FASN, is a Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Division of Internal Medicine, at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. He also serves as the Internal Medicine Division Professionalism Ambassador and is a Primary Investigator at the Prolato Clinical Research Center. With an extensive medical background, Dr. Biruh has held several academic and administrative roles, including Medical Director of Nephrology and Inpatient Dialysis at MD Anderson, and has worked in various hospitals in California and Texas. He holds a BA from the University of Texas at Austin, an MD from the University of Texas McGovern Medical School, and completed fellowships in Nephrology and Post-Doctoral research at Stanford University.

Significant leadership and research contributions mark Dr. Biruh's career. He has served on the Global Initiative for Better Health Executive Boards and the Gulf Coast Lupus Foundation of America. As a researcher, he has authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles and led several clinical trials focused on nephrology and onco-nephrology. His leadership roles extend to advisory positions at US Renal Care and the Yeabe Medical Center and Rehabilitation, where he helped establish a 30-chair dialysis clinic in Addis Ababa. Dr. Biruh's dedication to education is evident in his numerous teaching roles at Baylor College of Medicine and MD Anderson, where he has received multiple awards for excellence in teaching.

Dr. Biruh is deeply committed to leveraging his medical expertise and leadership experience to benefit the Ethiopian Diaspora Trust Fund (EDTF). As a member of the Ethiopian diaspora, he is passionate about addressing the Ethiopian community's health challenges. His experience in leading health initiatives, both locally and internationally, positions him to advocate effectively for impactful health projects in Ethiopia. Dr. Biruh aims to contribute to EDTF's mission by bringing informed perspectives, fostering stakeholder unity, and driving initiatives that improve healthcare access and outcomes for the Ethiopian community.
